Freud’s Seduction: Psychoanalysis and California

Saturday, October 20, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Dr. Castrillon will present a selection of his research on Psychoanalysis in California derived from the theoretical and clinical formulations developed in his forthcoming book California Psychoanalyst: Subjectivity and Clinical Praxis in the Far West. Inclusive of both the historical development and the Californication of psychoanalysis and grounded in his attention to the subject of the unconscious, Dr. Castrillon’s main focus is the compelling question of how and ‘which’ Freud came to these shores – what he terms “Freud’s seduction’. The taking root (or not) of psychoanalysis, certainly of interest in any specific locale and time, is particularly noteworthy when considering the peculiar case of California. It is here that the history of California and the Anglophone iteration of psychoanalysis are nearly coterminous.
