Martin E. Jay, Ph.D.

Martin Jay, Ph.D. graduated summa cum laude, Union College, studied at the London School of Economics and earned his doctorate in European Intellectual History at Harvard. During his distinguished scholastic career he has received numerous fellowships and awards in both the USA and Europe. He has taught in Oxford, Cambridge, Paris and at Harvard, Cornell and primarily at the University of California, Berkeley where he is the Sidney Hellman Ehrman Professor of History. Dr. Jay is the author of 14 books including The Dialectical Imagination: A History of the Frankfurt School and the Institute of Social Research 1923-50. His most recent book, Reason After its Eclipse: On Late Critical Theory, was published in 2016. He is recent past co-director of Critical Theory department at UC Berkeley.
